2011 Grammy Awards: Gaga arrived on the red carpet at last year’s Grammy awards not wearing a gown, but huddled within a womb/egg-like sculptural piece (dubbed a “vessel”) designed by Hussein Chalayan. Gaga had been pictured incubating in similar vessels in the days prior to the award show, as part of her meditative preparation, suitably, for her first performance of Born This Way.
A part of Born This Way’s theme, Gaga and her dancers were all wearing face and body makeup prothetics (influenced by a runway show by late designer and friend, Alexander McQueen). Because of the song’s theme of togetherness, and the inclusion of her dancers in the performance, I wanted to use a variety of nude tones in this design.
Colors & Materials Used: Mint Sorbet (Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear) base/tips, sponged over with white and Cloud light blue (Revlon)—done at random to create the opaque quality of the vessel color. ”Nude” tones used: Surely Ivory (Sally Hansen No Chip), Little Brown Dress (Essie), Petal Pusher (Sally Hansen Insta-Dri), and Case Study (Essie). Rhinestones were painted over to create the “prosthetics”, and black details were added with a nail art pen to mimic Gaga’s makeup.
Born This Way turns a year old today! It is unclear whether Gaga will be performing tomorrow night, but she is currently in LA and will more than likely be attending. I’ll be tuning in to see what my design inspiration is for next year!
